Consider this - As per a study done across university campuses in the UK:
- 1/3rd of students were victims of crime during the past year.
- Almost 12% were the victim of theft or attempted theft; 10% were the victim of burglary.
- Theft, criminal damage and burglary accounted for 7 in 10 crimes.
- 6 in 10 crimes were experienced by repeat victims – the most victimised 3% of students experienced over a quarter of all crimes.
- Over 4% of students were stalked during the past year.
- Nearly 12% of students in private accommodation experienced a burglary compared with 5% of students who lived in university accommodation. Students who had been burgled were more likely to live in accommodation with fewer surveillance measures than those who had not.
- 60% of all incidents were not reported to the police.
- Students felt most fearful of having their property stolen on campus at night. They perceived the least risk and were least fearful of all forms of intimate partner violence.
{* As per the UK Home Office sponsored Study (Campbell and Bryceland)}
These statistics prove beyond doubt that campuses are increasingly transforming from sacred stress-free places of learning into feared risk-prone hotspots of violence and crime. Universities across the world are increasingly realising that reporting of crime, incidents and accidents is the first and most important step towards mitigation and prevention. Reporting can further help you perform risk analysis and create & implement crime and risk mitigation policies.
Generally, incident reporting is done via conventional methods, for example, submission of incident reporting forms on paper. However, poor communication, lack of authority or lack of process & planning, often lead to the failure of conventional methods.
A campus can be made crime free by:
- Reporting of incidents: All crimes or incident should be reported. All facts (in any form) should be recorded along with the reporting incident.
- Investigating facts: Incidents should be investigated and recorded.
- Recording the follow-ups: Investigation and findings should be followed up and recorded.
- Analysis & Mitigation: Facts and findings should be analysed. Analysis can help in finding patterns which will provide significant inputs in defining mitigation policies.
Our Campus Incident Reporting System, an implementation of CRIMe-S for the University environment, an innovative software service specially built & customised for Universities, does just that. The incident reporting service enables you to:
- Report incidents & accidents 24X7 Online: The incident reporting and management service is Web-based and anyone can log on or report an incident from anywhere, anytime, 24X7 online. You can know in real-time what’s happening around you and where.
- Standardise investigation follow-up process, make investigation processes transparent: The incident reporting tool is a workflow-enabled system. You can configure your business flow and rules into system. For example – Fire incident reported would go in work queue of a X, while Theft incident reported would go in work queue of Y. Investigation officers later can follow up incident investigation process as per the "Service Level Agreements" defined by you. The victim or witness who report the incident can easily find the status information of the case they reported.
- Identify risk factors before it's too late: Advanced reports generated using in-built reporting system help you become aware of the criminal or accidental risk patterns & trends. Have the key information available in a single click to help you take preventive and control steps before it’s too late. Know what to do and how to act quickly based on the automated, real-time analysis.
- Store and share evidence securely at central location: Securely store & share photos, charts, maps, diagrams and additional evidences online in evidence at central location.
- Mitigate and control crime & risks: Our incident reporting and management software helps the management take key strategic decisions and implement crime prevention and mitigation activities at the right time.
With the Campus Incident Reporting System; let us help you accelerate your incident reporting & follow-up processes. Allow us to help you make YOUR campus a safe and sound place.
